My Mountain Collective trip to Chamonix

By William St-Hilaire

Verticality, immensity and genepi

For a ski lover, a first visit to Chamonix is the equivalent of entering a sanctuary. Once you arrive in this mythical valley, a simple glance at the steep walls that line its sides will immediately give you a strong feeling. It is for this very reason that the place probably needs no formal presentation. Its immoderate terrain and breathtaking views have made Chamonix a unique destination with a very singular identity, where dangers and beauties mix in an almost paradoxical way. Here are some recommendations on my favorite destination of the ski world.

Skiers from all over the world

Skiers come here from all over the world. Each for different reasons. Some, like me, come here to test themselves, learn and progress. Others come here for a family ski vacation, because yes, despite appearances, there are green runs here. Some come here to experience the atmosphere of the village, its restaurants and its history engraved by the beginnings of mountaineering. And of course, others flock here to party in the village's bars and nightclubs.

In addition to its bucolic village, Chamonix offers skiing in the valley's 5 main resorts; Le Brévent, Flégère, Les Grands Montets, Balme - Le Tour - Vallorcine and Les Houches. Mountain Collective and Chamonix Unlimited being partners, members benefit from discounts on day tickets for all the resorts in the valley. These freebies can be picked up in person at Montenvers, the train station offering transit between the Chamonix valley and the Sea of Ice, one of Chamonix's signature excursions.

From the Aiguille du Midi to Courmayeur

On the same theme, no other place is more symbolic of Chamonix than the famous aiguille du midi. A first glance at this peak shakes the imagination, and a visit to its 3,842 meter summit thanks to its cable car leaves no one indifferent. Once on top, the view of Mont Blanc and the surrounding area is simply unforgettable and skiing in the Vallée Blanche is just a few turns away.

Of course, skiing off-piste in these places has its share of potential dangers. And even for the best skiers in the world, the use of a professional mountain guide is a prerequisite. Because the severity of the territory and the level required to navigate it requires specific knowledge. These true guardian angels of the mountain will help you discover Chamonix and its surroundings like no other. The guide will also suggest itineraries according to your level and will make you live memorable experiences on and off the snow

. From Chamonix, a day trip to Courmayeur on the Italian side through the Mont Blanc tunnel is also recommended. Despite the short distance, Courmayeur offers a different atmosphere and Al Dente skiing!

The famous Genepi

A visit to Chamonix is not complete without tasting all of its local products, including Genepi, a liqueur made from the most famous of the aromatic plants of the Alps, bearing the same name (Genepi), growing in the Alps.

In the heart of the Haute-Savoie, Chamonix will certainly allow your dreams of nature and mountains to come true. And I'll tell you a little secret... One visit won't be enough!
